Establishing and monitoring Safety Performance Indicators (SPI)

The program provides guidance on building and operating a Safety Performance Indicator (SPI) system, helping participants learn how to select indicators, use data, and monitor safety performance in support of management.
Delivered for: Vietnam Airlines

Program information

  • Duration: 3 days
  • Format: In person, classroom-based
  • Audience: Managers and safety specialists
  • Instructor: Risk expert
  • Class size: 30 participants

Why establish and monitor Safety Performance Indicators (SPI)?

Safety measurement in many organizations is not yet closely linked to management activities and decision-making. Data may already have been collected, but if it has not been turned into suitable indicators and monitored systematically, the value of that data for safety management is not yet used effectively.
In many organizations:
  • Lag and Lead indicators have not yet been clearly distinguished
  • Safety data has not yet been used effectively
  • Indicators do not yet accurately reflect the level of risk
  • Lack of a system for aggregation and monitoring (dashboard).
This leaves safety monitoring and improvement largely reactive. Establishing a suitable indicator system and organizing data-based monitoring is therefore the basis for assessing safety performance and supporting management.

Program objectives

The program focuses on how to establish and monitor a safety indicator system, enabling participants to:
  • Understand the types of safety indicators (Lag & Lead)
  • Know how to select and establish appropriate indicators
  • Use safety data sources
  • Monitor and assess safety performance in the organization.

Program content

The program focuses on the following topics:
  • Lag and Lead indicators
  • Safety data sources (FDA, LOSA, GOSA)
  • Safety performance reporting
  • Safety dashboard

Training on Safety Performance Indicators (SPI) and safety data monitoring
The program introduces participants to the indicator system, data sources, reporting, and monitoring tools so they understand how to measure and assess safety performance in practice.

The topics take participants from understanding indicator types and data sources through to reporting, aggregating, and monitoring safety performance in practice.

Delivery approach

The course is delivered as follows:
  • Theory combined with an introduction to the model
  • Apply to specific measurement situations.
By connecting knowledge with measurement situations, the program helps participants understand how an indicator system operates in practice.

Value gained after the program

After completing the program, participants can:
  • Know how to measure safety quality
  • Establish and monitor appropriate indicators
  • Align safety objectives with organizational objectives
  • Enhance the ability to monitor and evaluate effectiveness.

Monitor and assess safety performance through SPI
A suitable indicator system supports data-based monitoring and assessment of safety performance, and helps link safety objectives with the objectives of the organization.

The program aims to help participants move from collecting data to selecting, establishing, and monitoring appropriate indicators, thereby supporting the assessment of safety performance in the organization.

Which units is the program suitable for?

The program is suitable for:
  • Organizations that need to build a safety measurement system
  • Safety management and specialist teams
  • Units that need to monitor safety performance based on data.

Tailor the indicator system to each organization's objectives and data

An indicator system is truly suitable only when it reflects the organization's objectives, data, and operational characteristics. The selection of indicators and the method of monitoring therefore need to be designed around the actual context, rather than applying one common set of indicators to every unit.
Hung Viet supports identification of a suitable set of indicators, design of monitoring and reporting methods, and adaptation of the content to the operational characteristics of each organization.
